Medicare Part A
Part A is hospital insurance that covers hospital stays and services provided by skilled nursing facilities.
Medicare Part B
Part B provides outpatient medicare insurance that covers doctor office visits and preventative health care.
Medicare Part C
Part C also known as Medicare Advantage, provides coverage through private insurance companies that contract with the Federal Government.
Medicare Part D
Part D provides coverage for prescription drugs.
Medicare Supplements
Also known as Medigap is extra health insurance policy that covers services not offered with original medicare. Some help reduce out of pocket costs.
When can I enroll into Medicare or What are the enrollment periods?
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is your first chance to sign up for Medicare. It starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment Period is when Medicare beneficiaries can add, change, or drop their Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage plan coverage for the next year. The Open Enrollment Period – sometimes called the Annual Election Period – runs each year from October 15 to December 7. During this time, Anyone with Medicare Parts A & B can switch to a Part C plan. Anyone with Medicare Part C can switch back to Parts A & B. Anyone who has or is signing up for Medicare Parts A or B can join, drop or switch a Part D prescription drug plan. Anyone with Medicare Part C can switch to a new Part C plan. Coverage will start on January 1 of the following year.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
The Special Enrollment Period allows you to make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage when certain events happen in your life. For example. if you move or you lose other insurance coverage.
General Enrollment Period (GEP)
If the Initial Enrollment Period or Special Enrollment Period is missed, there is another chance to enroll. Sign up for Medicare Parts A & B can also happen between January 1 and March 31 each year. Medicare coverage would begin on July 1 of the same year. It is important to note that if Part A is needed during this time, enrollment in Part B is required at this time as well.
Medicare Advantage Enrollment Period
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period provides additional opportunities to change Medicare Advantage plans outside the Annual Election Period (October 15 – December 7).
Medigap Enrollment Period
It’s recommended to buy a Medigap policy during the 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, because during this time, any Medigap policy sold in state can be purchased, even with health problems. This period automatically starts the 65th birthday month and also enrolled in Medicare Part B.
